ENGLISH MARTYRS CATHOLIC SCHOOL HARTLEPOOL CASE STUDY

English Martyrs Catholic School & Sixth Form College, part of the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, required the resurfacing of its existing sand‑filled synthetic turf pitch in 2025. The 100m by 67m facility had reached the end of its serviceable life, and the Trust sought a modern, high‑performance replacement capable of supporting hockey, curriculum PE and wider community use. Following surveys carried out in partnership with England Hockey, Hartlepool Caledonians and Billingham Hockey Club, Adsum Sport and Play was appointed to design and supply the new system.

The project involved the full removal of the old sand‑filled surface, localised base repairs and installation of a new Polytan sand‑dressed artificial grass system laid over a 15mm in‑situ shockpad meeting Gen2 performance standards. This combination provides a fast, consistent and durable playing surface suitable for both school and club hockey. Throughout the works, Simon Hall acted as a single point of contact, coordinating deliveries, attending site regularly and ensuring all activities aligned with the School’s health, safety and safeguarding requirements.

"Adsum Sport and Play have proven to be an excellent choice for this MUGA resurfacing project at English Martyrs Catholic School & Sixth Form College. Through detailed planning and excellent communications, we always knew what was happening, with Simon personally attending site, consulting closely with the school, coordinating deliveries and tailoring works to meet all the school’s health, safety and security requirements. Simon ‘owned’ the whole job and clearly takes pride in his work. He leaves nothing to chance and provides clients with a very welcome level of reassurance. The client endorses the above comments and adds that Adsum have ‘been fantastic to work with, we’ve been kept in the loop every step of the way’, and ‘it’s been a very smooth process from start to finish.’"

The project benefited from detailed planning, proactive communication and a strong focus on quality assurance. Regular progress updates, photographs and QA reports ensured the School and Trust remained fully informed at every stage. The completed pitch has delivered a significant improvement in playability, durability and overall presentation, providing a first‑class facility for students and the wider hockey community.

The School, Trust and their representatives concluded that Adsum Sport and Play were a class act throughout the project and confirmed they would have no hesitation in including Adsum in future tender opportunities for MUGA resurfacing works.
